Parent Visitation Week

Families are invited to join the final 20 minutes of their dancer’s regularly scheduled class.

Visitation Week is especially helpful for:

  • Pre Ballet through Level 2 families
  • Families who are new to Weehawken
  • Anyone with questions about class or the upcoming performance

During the visit, families may:

  • Watch the end of class
  • Ask questions
  • Take class pictures
  • Record the dance for at-home practice
  • Collect costumes when they are ready

A Guide for Dancers and Families

All About Pointe

Pointe is an exciting process—not something dancers are expected to figure out alone. Our complete guide explains readiness, beginning at the barre, gradual progression, performances, fittings, shoe care and everything families need to know before purchasing pointe shoes.

Pointe is always a choice.

Dancers can continue to grow, audition for lead roles and find success at Weehawken whether or not they choose to dance on pointe.

For Weehawken Families

Observing Classes

We know families enjoy seeing what their dancers and aerialists are learning. Our viewing options are designed to help families stay connected while allowing students and teachers to remain focused during class.

Classroom Viewing Options

Viewing arrangements may vary by class and location. Please use the designated viewing option rather than entering the classroom during class.

Lobby Viewing

At locations with lobby monitors, families may watch class from the designated viewing area. These monitors allow families to observe without adding distractions inside the classroom.

Please remember that lobby viewing is shared with other families. Keep conversations quiet and supervise accompanying children.

Designated Viewing Areas

Some locations may provide a window, balcony or another designated area for observation. Please remain in the approved viewing area and follow any location-specific instructions.

If you are unsure where to watch, ask your dancer’s teacher or a Weehawken staff member.

Inside the Classroom

Regular classes are generally not open for in-room observation unless the teacher has invited families in for a scheduled visitation, demonstration or special event.

Even well-meaning visitors can change how students participate, especially in younger classes. A quieter classroom helps dancers become more independent and allows the teacher to maintain the flow of class.

If Your Dancer Is Having a Difficult Day

Please allow the teacher or assistant to help your dancer enter and settle into class whenever possible. This helps students develop trust, confidence and a consistent class routine.

If your dancer needs a different plan, the teacher will communicate with you.

Parents Visitation Week

Each semester, we schedule a Parents Visitation Week. Families of students in Primary through Level 2 are invited to observe the final portion of class, see what students have been learning and ask appropriate class or performance questions.

Visitation Week is especially helpful for newer families who want to understand class structure, progress and performance preparation.

Please Protect the Learning Environment

While observing, please avoid calling to students, giving corrections, tapping on windows or trying to get a dancer’s attention. Let the teacher lead the class and save conversations with your dancer until afterward.

The Weehawken Dance Blog

Glitter in the Sink

Dance and aerial training involve much more than learning steps and tricks. Our blog explores the questions, experiences and behind-the-scenes details that help families understand what we do—and why it matters.

Read about training, performances, costumes, confidence, technique, studio life and the wonderfully messy process of helping young artists grow.
