Hip Hop is a culture and an art form
Our goal is to help students understand that Hip Hop is more than movement copied from a video. It is a living culture with history, foundational styles, music, community and individual expression.
Age-appropriate classes may explore grooves, Breaking, Popping, Locking, freestyle and other street-dance foundations while also developing choreography and performance skills.
Different instructors bring different backgrounds and strengths, giving students opportunities to experience a range of movement approaches within the larger Hip Hop tradition.
What Hip Hop students develop
Dancers gain physical skills while learning how to listen, collaborate, remember material and bring their own personality to movement.
Serious learning without losing the joy
We want Hip Hop class to feel energetic, welcoming and fun—but that does not mean students are simply following along.
Our classes are structured to help dancers build real movement skills, understand musicality, learn choreography, practice working as an ensemble and grow more confident over time.
Students are encouraged to work hard, support one another and bring their own personality into the room. We emphasize growth and artistic development rather than competition.
Hip Hop becomes part of the story
Weehawken students have opportunities to perform in two fully staged theatrical dance productions each year.
Instead of a traditional recital made up of unrelated routines, our productions bring classes together inside a larger story. Hip Hop dancers may become characters, ensembles and important parts of the theatrical world.
Performance helps students develop confidence, teamwork, musicality, responsibility and a stronger connection to their classmates.
