Ballet Classes for Children & Teens
Classical training that develops strong technique, musicality, artistry and a lasting love of dance.
Weehawken offers a connected ballet program from a child’s first class through advanced teen training and pointe. Students grow through thoughtful, age-appropriate progressions in a positive and encouraging environment.
A place to begin—and a place to keep growing
Some students come to ballet because they dream of pointe shoes. Others want to improve their lyrical, jazz or aerial technique. Some simply love music and movement. All of those reasons are welcome.
Pre & Primary Ballet
Young dancers explore movement, musicality, classroom skills and beginning ballet vocabulary through developmentally appropriate classes.
Building Foundations
Students learn ballet alignment, introductory barre and center work, French terminology, coordination and musical awareness.
Developing Technique
Dancers build strength, control, balance, turning preparation, allegro, artistry and the physical foundations used in pre-pointe work.
Advanced Training
Experienced dancers refine technique, musical nuance, turning, grand allegro, performance quality and choreographic interpretation.
Technique, artistry and confidence
Strong Foundations
Students develop posture, alignment, coordination, balance, strength and control through progressive barre, center and traveling exercises.
Musicality & Artistry
Ballet is not only about steps. Dancers learn to listen, phrase movement with music, communicate through gesture and bring intention to choreography.
Growth Over Time
Dancers learn that progress comes through consistency, patience and attention to detail. These lessons carry far beyond the studio.
A faculty with depth and experience
Weehawken’s ballet faculty brings together a variety of professional backgrounds, teaching certifications and lived experience as dancers and educators.
Our teachers collaborate to provide a connected program grounded in strong classical foundations, healthy alignment, age-appropriate progression, musicality and artistry.
Rather than requiring every teacher to approach ballet in exactly the same way, our program benefits from multiple respected training traditions and the shared knowledge of the faculty.
Informed by internationally respected curricula
Weehawken’s ballet program incorporates training principles from established classical ballet education organizations.
American Ballet Theatre® National Training Curriculum
The ABT® National Training Curriculum is an eight-level program that combines high-quality artistic training with dancer health and child-development principles.
Weehawken’s faculty includes ABT® Certified Teachers with completed teacher training from Pre-Primary through advanced curriculum levels.
Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing
Our faculty also includes training and certification through the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, an internationally recognized dance examination and teacher-education organization.
These complementary backgrounds help create a broad, thoughtful approach to classical ballet education.
Love lyrical, jazz or aerial? Take ballet.
Ballet develops placement, control, coordination, balance, lines, foot articulation and musicality. These skills support nearly every other dance form.
Aerialists can benefit from stronger feet, legs, alignment and body awareness. Jazz and lyrical dancers gain greater control in turns, leaps and transitions.
Ballet does not need to be a dancer’s favorite style to become one of the most valuable parts of their training.
Curious about pointe?
Pointe is a gradual process—not something dancers need to rush toward. Pre-pointe preparation develops strength, alignment, balance, foot articulation and readiness for future pointe work.
Pointe work may begin at age 11 or older with instructor approval. New pointe students begin primarily at the barre and gradually increase the load placed on their feet and bodies.
There is no pressure to dance on pointe. It can be beautiful and rewarding, but it is completely optional. Students who do not pursue pointe may still audition for featured roles and find tremendous success in the Weehawken program.
Ballet becomes part of a larger story
Ballet students participate in two fully staged theatrical dance productions each year—our winter production and an original spring production.
Dancers do more than perform an isolated recital routine. Their classes become characters, scenes and ensembles within a complete theatrical world.
These experiences help students develop artistry, teamwork, responsibility, stage presence and confidence while creating memories with their dance community.

Montrose ballet FAQ
What age can children begin ballet?
Weehawken offers beginning ballet experiences starting around age 3. Class age ranges and readiness expectations vary, so check the current schedule for the best fit.
Does my child need previous ballet experience?
No. We offer classes for beginning through advanced dancers. Older students beginning ballet may need help choosing the class that best matches their age and experience.
How is ballet level placement determined?
Placement considers age, experience, technique, strength, maturity, attendance and demonstrated skills. Students do not automatically advance based only on the number of semesters completed.
Can my child try ballet before committing?
Any youth dance class with available space may be tried free during the first week of the semester. This trial opportunity applies to youth dance and excludes aerial classes.
Does every ballet student have to dance on pointe?
No. Pointe is optional. Students can become beautiful, accomplished dancers, audition for featured roles and succeed within Weehawken without choosing pointe.
When can a student begin pointe?
Pointe may begin at age 11 or older with instructor approval after sufficient ballet and pre-pointe preparation. Read our All About Pointe page for the complete process.
Do ballet students perform?
Our youth performance classes participate in Weehawken’s winter and spring productions. Check the individual class description for specific performance expectations.
Are scholarships and payment plans available?
Yes. Weehawken offers payment plans and scholarship opportunities for qualifying families. Availability and application requirements may vary by semester.
