Working Together

Our policies help students, families, and instructors share clear expectations and work together throughout the year.

All families are encouraged to review these policies at the beginning of each session. Additional requirements may apply to performances, aerial classes, specific locations, and special programs.

Select a section below or scroll to review all policies.

Attendance and Communication

  • Consistent attendance supports student progress, class continuity, and successful ensemble work.
  • Please email the instructor about absences or expected late arrivals. One week’s notice is appreciated whenever possible.
  • Students who miss significant class content may need modified choreography, adjusted staging, or a different class placement.
  • Level 3+ students: Dancers are expected to learn missed choreography from classmates or approved class videos before returning whenever possible.
  • If missed material is not learned, the instructor may adjust choreography or remove the student from that portion of the piece.

Performance Participation

  • Performance participation is encouraged but not required.
  • If a student will not participate, please email questions@weehawkenarts.org by the third class of the session.
  • Students who choose to perform must attend their regularly scheduled classes, required rehearsals, dress rehearsal, and assigned performances.
  • Performance fees are nonrefundable after the participation deadline.
  • A student who must withdraw from a performance should notify the instructor and administrative team promptly. Late withdrawals may require choreography or casting changes and may affect future role assignments.

Review tuition, performance fees, and cancellation policies.

Arrival, Departure and Pick-Up

  • Students should arrive dressed and ready for class but no more than 10–15 minutes early unless otherwise instructed.
  • Late students should enter quietly and wait for an appropriate moment to join the class.
  • All students must remain inside the facility until their ride is present. Students may not wait outside or on the street.
  • Montrose students under age 10: A parent, guardian, or authorized adult must enter the facility to pick them up.
  • Late pick-up fee: If a student has not been picked up within 10 minutes after class ends, a fee of $1 per minute will be charged. Instructors cannot leave students unattended.

Student Studio Expectations

  • Dress code: Students must follow the required dress or uniform code for each class. Students who are not appropriately dressed may be asked to observe rather than participate.
  • Water: Bring a labeled water bottle to every class. Only water is permitted on the dance floor.
  • Restrooms: Students should use the restroom before class whenever possible.
  • Leaving class: Students may not leave the classroom without instructor permission.
  • Respect: Students are expected to listen, remain focused, and treat instructors and classmates respectfully.
  • Equipment: Equipment may be used only when instructed and according to the teacher’s directions.
  • Phones: Phones must remain put away during class unless the instructor gives permission to record choreography.
  • Food: Food, gum, and drinks other than water are not permitted on the dance floor.
  • Shoes: Street shoes are not permitted in dance classrooms. Students should wear the shoes designated for their class.
  • Cleanliness: Students should dispose of trash and help keep classroom and lobby areas tidy.
  • Ongoing behavior concerns: Repeated disruptive or disrespectful behavior may result in a conference, removal from class, or dismissal from the program without a refund.

Parent and Guardian Expectations

  • Parents and guardians are not permitted inside the classroom during regular class time unless invited by the instructor.
  • Parent visitation opportunities are scheduled during the year so families can observe student progress.
  • At the Montrose studio, lobby televisions allow families waiting onsite to view classes. Remote camera access is not available.
  • Waiting family members should keep voices, videos, and devices at a respectful volume.
  • Families are responsible for reviewing schedules, instructor messages, performance information, and other program communications.

Visit the Family Hub for schedules and additional resources.

Questions and Conflict Resolution

Questions and concerns are welcome. Addressing them directly and respectfully helps us understand the situation and work toward an appropriate resolution.

  • Classroom concerns: Contact the instructor first. If the concern remains unresolved, contact the administrative team.
  • Concerns involving another student or family: Please bring the issue to the instructor or administration rather than addressing another student directly.
  • Artistic and casting decisions: Class placement, choreography, staging, and casting decisions are made by the instructors and Artistic Director based on the needs of the student and production.
  • Respectful communication: Concerns should be communicated directly rather than through public posts, group messages, or confrontations involving students and families.
  • Threatening, harassing, or repeatedly disrespectful conduct toward students, families, staff, or instructors may result in a written warning or removal from the program without a refund.
