Dance is a Performing Art
In addition to our dance training exercises, students have the opportunity to perform. Because dance is a performing art, we consider performance an important part of our program. Performing teaches dancers to work as a team, be confident in front of an audience, and be proud of their accomplishments, boosting self-esteem. It also gives parents a chance to see their child’s improvement over the semester.
We encourage all students to participate in the performance, but it is not mandatory.
The deadline for students to notify WCA if they do not wish to participate is by the third class of the session. Notice must be given in writing via email to questions@weehawkenarts.org.
Students are expected to attend all classes for their level if they wish to perform.
Students are required to attend all rehearsals, including a mandatory dress rehearsal.
Please note: Each semester, there is a show fee for each class enrollment. This fee may vary from year to year.

Movement from Class Evolves into Movement on Stage
Performance choreography is a tool we use to teach the curriculum of the class. Students will learn choreography during class that incorporates the skills taught for each level. At the conclusion of the semester, we have “tech week,” the week prior to the performance. This allows students and behind-the-scenes helpers (lighting designers, music tech, stage managers, dressers, costumers, etc.) to put the entire performance together. During the performance, students will showcase the choreography they have learned, which includes the steps they have been practicing in class. At Weehawken, education is paramount. Our performances showcase what your dancer is learning in class.
Auditions for Lead Roles
We hold auditions for students for “special parts” or “lead roles,” as decided by the Artistic Director. Audition dates, prerequisites, roles, and the number of special parts change with each show, as each performance is unique.
All students must be currently enrolled in a Weehawken Dance class to be eligible to audition.
Students hoping for a lead role must audition and plan to attend extra rehearsals, primarily in Montrose and sometimes in Ridgway.
Attendance and excellent communication regarding these rehearsals are required to be eligible for lead roles.

Tajiana Rueschhoff’s dance journey began at the age of 5 when she first stepped into a small ballet school in Mississippi, sparking a passion that would endure a lifetime. Growing up in Ouray, Colorado, she continued to nurture her love for dance with Weehawken, honing her skills over the years. Travel played a pivotal role in her development, allowing her to train under diverse instructors and immerse herself in various dance styles. Summers were often spent in intensive training at the Kansas City Ballet, further shaping her dedication to dance. Tajiana pursued her passion with pre-professional training at the Northwest Florida Ballet. Now, back in Ouray, she is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Geology at the University of Florida while eagerly embracing the opportunity to share her profound love for dance through teaching.
